Boarding and Guardianship
What arrangements are there for boarding at sixth form colleges?
If boarding facilities are an important factor in making your choice, then an Independent Senior School will have dedicated residential accommodation available and parents may prefer this option. City-based discrete colleges will normally have other accommodation arrangements, which may be separate bespoke student accommodation or perhaps a range of student digs in private residences. Whilst this does give the option of variety and price flexibility, parents need to be sure that there is adequate supervision for under-18s.
Are guardians required for students boarding at independent colleges?
For students under 18 years of age whose parents live abroad, schools and colleges will expect that a guardian, resident in the United Kingdom and living within reasonable travelling distance, will be legally appointed to act in loco parentis in the event of an emergency. Guardians may be relatives (grandparents, for example) but it is well worth consulting a professional agency for help, such as Gabbitas Educational Consultants, who have over 130 years’ experience in all aspects of independent education and have a dedicated Guardianship Department.
