Hurtwood House

Hurtwood House was founded in 1970 with the clear vision that the needs of the modern sixth former have changed and that, after GCSE, many students are ready for the challenge and the fresh impetus which can only be provided by a community specialising exclusively in their own age range.

At Hurtwood House we believe that sixth form students need the care and attention that can best be provided in a well-supervised, closely-knit boarding community. We are structured and safe, but less formal and less institutional than the traditional public school system. We are smaller, friendlier and more personal, and thus more capable of responding to the needs of each individual.

Hurtwood House has a strong work ethic. It is a small school with 300 boys and girls, but it is one of the largest and strongest sixth forms in England. It benefits from having specialist A-level teachers and has a very broad range of subjects to choose from. Hurtwood is equally strong in all the academic subjects but is especially famous for its creative and performing arts departments, considered by many to be the best in the country. It provides more support than is usually found in public school sixth forms by means of a uniquely thorough system of weekly monitoring. It also has an exceptionally generous staff/student ratio of 1:6. The examination results are first class and have put Hurtwood House consistently high up in the league tables, but when you come here you are most likely to be struck by the energy and motivation of our students. This is a community of young people who know what they want to achieve and who are working with confidence and enthusiasm towards it.
